I want to be in love with what I do at all times, and I want to stay in love.
Travelling was a big part of my childhood and one that I value very much. In some respects, I can't help but be a bit of a gypsy as an adult. I get fidgety if I'm in one place for longer than three months.
I like to record records in Los Angeles. It's less distracting than New York, where I was based.
Whether I am collaborating with different people, I like changing projects conceptually so I can grow.
I would say I am an amateur guitarist.
I started singing at age three - I opened my mouth some time, singing along to the radio, and my parents were like, 'Wow! You have a really great voice!'
It was clear to my parents that I had the gift of voice, and they encouraged me to pursue it.
Being in the public eye, there will always be negatives. Those dark aspects will always be there and, so too, those things that will try and tear you down, but I have made the choice not to engage with them. I'm not going to let them affect me or destroy me.
My mum will always come and see my shows if she can, and if she can't, she'll text or email just before wishing me a great show and telling me how much she loves me. She still gives tonnes of positive reinforcement and love. It's really remarkable what that does for a child, and it's really remarkable what that does for me as an adult.
For me, songwriting starts with a melody. When a musician plays a chord progression, either the words and vocal melody come to me, or they don't. That's how I determine who to write with. It works, or it doesn't.
It took a long while for me to even put out a record because there were so many options of how to do a song, and in some respects, I'm never totally happy with the outcome.
If I were to make an uneducated guess about L.A.'s relationship with folk and psychedelia, I would say it must be the weather.
